Pianist Eugene Marlow leads a team of Bobby Sanabria/dr, Michael Hashim/as-ss, Frank Wagner/g and Matthew Gonzalez/perc through eight warm and agreeable originals on this disc. He’s got a strong and authoritative touch on the piano and displays it on the strutting “Free Spirit” as well as on the bopping duet with Wagner on the title track. Hashim has a warm sound on the alto, and cruises well on the Latin ”For the Children” and goes bel canto on “Suddenly” as well as reflective on “In a Quiet Moment.” Marlow shows his vocal prowess with Wagner on “Scat” and the whole team steams up “Inside Blues” as Hasim’s alto sears like a Cold Steel blade. These guys are fun!
