Mardie Millit & Michael Garin: Hey, Look! It’s Michael & Mardie!

If you want your jazz presented like a dinner theatre, step right up! Vocalists and banterists Mardie Millit and Michael Garin deliver this disc like a cabaret with support from Billy Stritch/p, Maitreya  Padukone/perc and Steve Doyle/b. The music and moods are both manic, starting off with a vintage boogie on Louis Prima’s “Jump, Jive and Wail” with G & M rolling back and forth like a ping pong match. Sardonic and clever, Mardie parodies Porter with a De-lightfully Indian read on “It’s Diwaili!” while Garin plays it straight and true on “My Cherie Amour.” They give a hoot of a delivery as they swing for the fences on   “Surf Carmen” and Millit shines on “The Sunny Side of The Street.” All that’s missing is someone at the back of the sleeve scribbling “for a good time call….”
