Pianist Romain Collin shows himself to be a credible composer as he the mixes modern feel of popular music with creative jazz sensibilities here with a trio including Kendrick Scott/dr and Luques Curtis/b. There is an exciting urgency to a piece such as “99” which mixes programming, a fervent groove and even some voices, while “The Line” include extra percussion for exotic textures. There is much complexity that is whittled down to its essence in material such as “Clockwork” and “Holocene,” which includes some guitar work by Grey McMurray that increase the pulse. Collin’s read of the one cover, ‘Round About Midnight” is impressive in its link between bebop and modern indie. This guy’s got my attention!
