Guilhem Flouzat: Portraits

Drummer Guilhem Flouzat delivers a lyrical collection of material that veers between assertive and bopping jazz along with dashes of indie music. The team of Jay Rattman/as, Ben Wendel/ts, Anna Webber/ts-fl, Laurent Coq-Can Olgun/p and Desmond White work together for some assertive post bop on “Ben’s Song” while Flouzat’s sticks delver a restless undercurrent on “Truce.” The team cascades along with White’s bass on the easy coasty “Undercover” as the leader keeps things tidy underneath, while the tenor saxes get pensive on “Sleepwalk” and elliptical on “A Dream.” Vocalist Becca Stevens adds some subdued and serene lyrics to the gentle “Where We Should Go” and “floats over the dancing sticks on “Knight.” Clever work here.
