Most of us Americans have overlooked the career of the late Rory Gallagher, but he’s all but forgotten in his homeland of Ireland. The blues rock guitarist started out in the band Taste before going on his solo career, and this dvd includes both an intriguing documentary of his stint with the band as well as the complete legendary performance of the power trio at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival.
The documentary includes a history of the trio, which included Gallagher with John Wilson/dr and Richard McCracken. Interspersed between footage of the trio on promo videos and a three song stint from the Beat Club the same year are reminiscences from Brian May, Larry Coryell, The Edge and Sir Bob Geldhoff who put the concert into historical perspective. Gallagher’s playing here is electrifying, as on “Gambling Blues” and “Sugar Mama” and his Irish tenor voice set him apart from most other more refined vocalists. The tragedy of his all too short-lived career makes this a classic “what if” project. Guitar fans will find much to be inspired from.
