Bassist Mark Egan continues to accrue an impressive catalogue that builds up from his Pat Metheny days. His favorite format is the trio, and it’s hard to go wrong with Mitchel Forman/key and danny Gottlieb/dr. The team is quite flexible able to go from a funky New Orleanish “Small Town Blues with Forman’s slipping and sliding piano to dainty cymbals dancing around ruminating keys as Egan’s bass cries out on the title track. One of the signs of a real artist is to have a distinctive sound, and Egan displays that fingerprint of tone on the sleek “Summer Fun” and during the lovely melody on the rich and gentle “Gratitude” while he lurks around the corner on “Mountain People.” Easy blues glow on “After Math” while soft tones create sonic shadows on “The Path Home.” Laid back, subtle and impressively mellow.
