Bassist Lorin Cohen delivers an impressive session here with a team of Ryan Cohan/p-key, Donald Edwards/dr, Joe Locke/vib, Yvonnick Prene/harm, Victor Provost/stl-drm and Samuel Torres/perc.The team waxes and wanes in size, with harp and steel pan making a fun mix on the sizzling “ Saudade” and bouncy “Always in My Heart.” Hints of modal post modern grooves feature Cohan’s impressive piano and Locke’s kinetic work on the pulsating “Crossings” and the driving “The Hero’s Journey.” Cohen himself sounds sleek setting a hp groove on “Finding Center” and bows gracefully on the impressionistic ballad “The Sweetest Soul (For My Father).” Strong and varied outing, with the bass player/leader doing what he’s supposed to-set the tone and pace.
