This film by director Sam Jones is part of the “Lost in the River” project in which 2 dozen sets of lyrics written by Bob Dylan during his famed 1967 sessions of The Basement Tapes in upstate New York were interpreted by modern artists. In this documentary, you get to witness producer T-Bone Burnett bring together musicians such as Elvis Costello, Rhiannon Giddens, Taylor Goldsmith, Jim James and Marcus Mumford attempt to figure out how to best frame these previously unaccompanied words. Insights from Burnett such as “self consciousness takes away from the creative process” are interspersed between performances that include partial performances of “Diamond Ring,” Hidde Hidee Ho #16,” Kansas City” and others that are delivered in full during the Bonus Track section of the dvd. Dylan fans will discover a lost relative here.
