The quartet Kaze is comprised of Christian Pruvost and Natsuki Tamura on trumpet, Satoko Fujii at the piano and Peter Orins handling the drums. Together they bring together five songs ranting from just under 10 minutes to just over 20 on a mix of wild free form and avant garde. The trumpets open up the album on “Tioky Astimo” with a full 3 minute blast attack that is similar in effect to the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan with a brassy assault that eventually dies down into a semi melodic theme. The next piece opens up the opposite way, with a barely perceptible introduction on “Vents Contraires” that builds up in intensity, while “Running Around” mixes staccato horns with meandering rhythms. Percussion ricochet’s around with piano musings on “Inspiration” and the closing “Uminari” meanders in various directions. The clarity of the horns and warm pitch makes you hang in there with them, and the clean piano sounds have classical have modern classical leanings. If you’re a fan of the free, this is a home.
