AXE GRINDERS…Guitar Heroes: Making History

Here’s a gig I wish I had attended. At the 2013 Vancouver Island MusicFest, guitar giants Albert Lee, James Burton, Amos Garrett and David Wilcox got on stage with Lee’s regular touring band of Jon Greathouse/key, Will MacGregor/g and Jason Harrison Smith/dr for eleven songs that will make you wish you had kept your Telecaster all these years.

I guarantee you’ve heard these guys one time or another. Burton was with Rickie Nelson on the old TV show, as well as with Elvis, Jerry Lee Louis and did the original “Suzie Q” with Dale Hawkins in 1957, of which a version is done here that is vintage Cajun boogie. Lee was with the Crickets, Clapton and the Everly Brothers and burns up the stage with “Country Boy” as well as going rockabilly on “That’s All Right.” They take turns on almost all the songs, whle Garrett who got famous for his solo on ”Midnight at the Oasis” delivers a take of “Sleep Walk” that would make Santos and John drool in their pillows. Wilcox is the kid here but shows his KC chops on a swinging “Flip, Flop and Fly” while all four do some work on an instrumental read of “Polk Salad Annie” that will get your granny as they chomp, chomp, chomp. This is a disc that makes you thank the good Lord for Leo Fender and his Fullerton workshop. Amen!
