Jon Lundbom and Big Five Chord: Jeremiah

Guitarist Jon Lundbom and his team of Jon Irabagon/ss, Bryan Murray/saxes, Moppa Elliot/b and Dan Monaghan/dr bring along Justin Wood/as-fl and Sam Kulik/tb along for the ride of seven songs long on experimentation and thick layers of reeds with brass.

The album is named after the Biblical Prophet Jeremiah, who weeped over Jerusalem over her destruction and exile. The cries of “Peace, Peace, when there is no peace” is evident on the languid cries of “First Harvest” which also features LUndbom and Elliott crying in the wilderness. The team trips around like a three legged race as Monaghan hits to all fields on “Wiccan Prayer Song Medley” and the whole band gets a bit assertive along with Irabagon’s soprano and Lundbom’s picking on “The Bottle.” There’s also a concert tune at the end that is high on energy and excitement, while space age sound effects like a lunar landing is felt on “Lick Skillet.” Seemingly a bit more fun to play than absorb.
