Somebody Else’s Nightmare: Strength and Kindness

Here’s a hip band that fuses together parts of jazz and soul to create a highly attractive album. The band consists of Joe Holiday/b-voc-duduk, Cherie Chooljian/key, Miles Tune/perc, Alex Garcia-Adam Mick/woodwinds, Adam Mick/sax and J. Holiday/voc, and they do some finger snapping tunes that give a tip to Weather Report, yet also have a foot in hard bop Blue Note heaven, with just a dash of Mose Allison thrown in for good measure. Some clever sounding tenor sax works meets up with street wise singing on “Destination Nowhere” and a sardonic “Lonely Town.” Some funky drumming and wacka wooka guitar makes for a street fest on “Yard Full of Joes” and an upbeat gospel sound has you clapping your hands on “Generic Happy Song.” Mystical and Mid Eastern moods veer into hard bop create fusion moods on “Snake Hair” while a daring bass with a funky riff gets the tenor up and running on the Heavy Weather feel of “Worker Bees.” These guys don’t let up on ideas, and each one works. You feel like you’re going through different rooms on Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride with a different theme at every turn. Hold on tight. It’s a fun ride!
