Miguel Zenon: Identities are Changeable

Alto saxist/composer Miguel Zenon continues his exploration into the music of his heritage with a fascinating mix of music mixed with interviews that delves into the assimilation, both in word and in sound, of the identity of Puerto Ricans. With questions and answers used in the beginning, end and in the middle of each song, Zenon uses statements by Puerto Ricans as backgrounds and foregrounds for a rich and rollicking big band, as well as his own quartet with Luis Perdomo/p, Hans Glawishnig/b and Henry Cole/dr.

There is some stimulating swing with reeds and brass, with Zenon’s alto searing lyrical on the title track while the folkish melody of “My Home” is filled with exciting percussion. Perdomo’s piano flows on “Second Generation Lullaby” and big band tenorist John Ellis is featured on the assertive “Same Fight.” The question of what it means to be Puerto Rican in 21st century NYC is answered in both word and horn as the panoramic “First Language” includes a rich trombone solo by Tim Albright as well as revealing testimonies by the speakers. A celebration of life is provided on “Through Culture and Tradition” as Zenon and company make you feel like you’re dancing in a party line. Must be something in concert!
