Vocalist Joelle Lurie has a warm and husky voice as she delivers and album that mixes jazz, soul, indie an even a dash of folk on this release with Nick Consul/key, Benjamin Gllina/g-b and Conor Meehan/dr along with various mixed and matched guests.
A number of the most jazzy tracks have a Staxy horn section of Jeremy Viner/reeds and Eli Asher/tp and the get nice and bluesy on the slinky “All or Nothing At All” and the swampy NO-ish “What We Have is Better.” A pleasant surprise is a hard hitting and soul grooved take of “The Man I Love” which has Lurie showing some moxie. With Andrew Smiley’s acoustic guitar, she can get quite cozy on the folksy “Should We?” as well as the semi-indie title track. “Three States Away” gives a bit of the Nashville Skyline and the whole team bounces on the boppy “Almost Like Being in Love.” She sounds eager to please, always a good sign.
