Jeff Beck: Live In Tokyo

Every year they say that it will be the last time famed guitarist Jeff Beck will ever tour. As if we needed an extra excuse to go see the guy. Here, the mopped mod is  with a team of Jonathan Joseph/dr, Nicolas Meier/g and Rhonda Smith/b, and this stripped down band can go from blues to fusion to rock and ballads at the stomp of a pedal. Beck makes Hendrix’s “Little Wing” his very own, with some nice bending of the strings, while taking the Mingus classic “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat” and causing it to glow in the dark. Of course, with Beck, the ballads are simple rests between the ahrd hitters, and you get some excitement with “You Know, You Know” and “Hammerhead.” His roots pop out of the ground on a down and dirty “Rollin’ and Tumblin” and his Motown heart is revealed no Stevie Wonder’s “Cause We Ended As Lovers.” The reading of “A Day In The Life” is becoming a Beck standard, and rightly so, as he does things with it that go beyond Lennon and McCartney. An accompanying commentary shows the wry wit of the 60s rocker, and his humble appreciation of how far he’s come in life. An excellent inspiration both socially and musically. Now, if I could only have him show me his car collection…
