Mostly known as a reliable sideman or a leader of his own trio, pianist Frank Kimbrough takes on the quartet format with Steve Wilson/as-ss, Jay Anderson/b and Lewis Nash/dr through a collection of originals and standards. The percussive interplay between Nash and the leader is impressive and communicative, as displayed on the dancing “The Call” and medium tempo “Ode.” Wilson’s alto is rich and warm on the kinetic “Blue Smoke” and the bluesy “Kudzu,” while his soprano is dark and reflective on “ Trouble Man.” As for the leader, he is filled with fun ideas, doing some off kilter stride on “Afternoon in Paris” and being thoughtful and calm on “November.” Impressive outing.
