So, while waiting for me at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion to see an opera, my wife gets conned into buying a cd produced by a zealous vocalist named Darcell. My wife is such a soft touch that she drags me every year to the Del Mar County Fair to go through the tents and buy whatever kitchen gimmick is out there. Wanna borrow our garlic peeler?
Anyway, I put on this disc, and you know what? He’s pretty darned good! He’s got an earnest delivery, he’s in mid tenor range and uses a vibrato judiciously. Most of the songs have a 70s R&B feel to them; nice and acoustic, with a bit of rhythm guitar as on “Love Someone” and “Summer Days” while others such as “Love is Alright” have a piano or synthesizer covering the melody. He sounds intimate and sincere with acoustic guitar on “Let’s Make Love (Angela’s Birthday)” and he guaranteed my wife that “these two people in the song are married-no funny stuff here!” Gotta love this guy-he’s got a good heart and moxie.
