Pianist Christian Pabst leads a trio with David Andres/b and Kaspars Kurdeko/dr, but also mixes and matches with a horn section and or a string section on this varied collection of originals. Lovely strings and piano meld on congenial tunes such as “Arrival” and the suave “Departure,” while currents ebb and flow on the lovely “Like the Waves.” With bras and reeds, “Graba Luba” brings extra texture, and all joun together for a thrilling “Point Ephemere.” All is not soft and gentle, though, as some rock drumming hits hard on “Perpetuum.” The songs range from 3-7 minutes, so the solos by Pabst make their point succinctly and don’t overstay their welcome. Very fresh and refreshing.
