Beka & DJ Logic Project: Chillin’ In Batumi

At one time, if you used the word “fusion” in music, you were usually referring to the mix of jazz (electric) and rock. Here, the fusion is of “fusion” with hip hop sounds delivered by turntable-ist DJ Logic along with Butterscotch (who DOES make up these names?!?) who supplies vocals in the form of rap, spoken word, sound effects and a thing called “beat-box.” The team of Beka Gochiashvili/key, James Hurt/synth, Jaleel Shaw/as, Lamont McCain/eb and Justin Tyson/dr doe their best to advance the sound and vision of vintage Weather Report, with McCain’s unbelievable bass work sounding like Gene Kelly as he drives Tyson to kinetic frenzy and pushes Shaw into overdrive on “High Expectations” and “Bullet In the Air.” Electrifying keyboards and piano are soaring through the atmosphere on the “Miles’ Galaxy”  and the wonderfully explorative “Summer in Georgia, while hip hop vocals and beat actually work quite well on “Let’s Go” and “Homage.”  Impressive mix that gives hope for hip hop. Can they make it work in concert?
