Drummer Mark Lomax leads an intriguing trio with Edwin Bayard/ts and Dan Hulett/b on deft and dynamic collection of originals. Connected by thoughtful solos serving as interludes provided by each member, the songs range from a cataclysmic “Chaos” to an embracing and richly thick ballad such as “Love” which features Bayard’s tenor like an autumn sunset. A Coltrane-esque “Resurrection”hints at a Love Supremelike intensity, while a rich African lilt between Lomax and Hulett is a tribal delight on “Osiris.” Artistry and passion mix well, as bowed bass and brooding sax create a deep atmosphere on “Kemet.” This type of trio is a tough challenge, yet this group succeeds quite well on a variety of levels.
