Here’s a band that will wake you out of your slumber. Lead by classical guitarist Roi ‘Froik” Erez and tuba meister Omer “Mr. Poo” Plotniearz, Gypsy Hill has a rotating team of bass, drums and a trumpet/trombone section that will take you to places in Central and Eastern Europe, the Mediterranean, and to nightclubs of the world on this panoply of sounds and grooves.
Frenetic and funky grooves abound on danceable pieces such as “Balaka” while the Greek melody of “Ballad of Mr. E” winds like a coba. Thick synthsizers and Central Asian vocals compete with wild and incessant percussion on “ Caciula Pa Ureche” whle bluesy and hip electronic supports whomping tuna on ”Balkan Beast.” Sometimes you get reggae, other moments you can flip the channel and get some Balkan brass that sounds like a fire drill. Bohemia teams up with New Orleans on”Jammie Jam” , but through the whole experience, you feel like you’ve been kidnapped by a band of manic gypsy’s who are trying to show you everything they’ve ever learned on their travels. Marvelously overwhelming!
