Here is a collective of some of the strongest left of center artists with Tim Berne/as, Rez Abbasi/g, Michael Formanek/b and Ananda Gari/dr teaming together for a mix of melody and improve. The material here is quite edgy and angular, with Berne’s alto getting a workout on the elliptical and kinetic “Last Drops” and ascerbic “Are You Kidding Me?” Lots of room to stretch out here, and even Gari gets a chance on the open range of “Fields” while there’s lots of bullets ricocheting off the walls between drums and Abbasi’s guitar on ”Never Late.” The linear “Don’t Forget to Pet Cat” is the only piece that doesn’t feel like a syncopated roller coaster white knuckler. Lots of impressive solo spots, a feast for post mod fans.
