WONDERS FROM BRAZIL…Paul Padilha: Songs of a Dollar Store Millionaire

The actual title on the cover of this album is in Portuguese, and it reads “Na Lojinha de Eu Me Sinot Millionario.” What you get here is a vocalist with a rich, earthy and masculine voice, and he mixes it up in a variety of wonderfully rhythmic settings that will get under your sun-burnt skin. Except for an exceptionally intriguing read of “Summertime” which bounces back and forth in English and Portuguese, you’re not going to understand a single world. Who cares? Simple support like percussion and string on “Guia Facil Para LIdar Com Pessoas Dificeis” is a thrill no matter what thick layers of ukulele, shakers, guitar and “violaos” create a rich wave on ”Partido Baixo.” Every song is filled with a wry smile, and it exudes on joyful reggae-infused “Eu E Minhas Ideias Geniais” or the sparsely flavored “Tapas.” Speaking of food, the joy in this whole album is the sense that Padilha feels secure in the simple pleasures of rhythm and rhyme. He trusts his instincts in vocal delivery and instrumental support. This is going to be one of your favorite non-Jobim albums ever.
