Sylvain Rifflet & Jon Irabagon: Perpetual Motion (A Celebration of Moondog)

A pair of French saxophonists Jon Irabagon/as and Sylvain Rifflet/ts-cl get together here for a post modern collection of sounds and rhythms that focus more on free form improvisation that melody or lyricism. Tongue slapping saxes on “Round Paris”  or stark Asian strings on “Fleur De Les” seem more to create a thoughtful mood than anything else. Peculiar percussions pop up here and there on pieces such as “Heat on the Heather”  and “My Tiny Butterfly” (along with vocal choruses)  that come across like backgrounds for some indie movie than something you want to hear in the local jazz club.
