B stands for the B3. Hammond , that is, and it’s in B is for bluesy abundance here as Nancy Kelly also uses B for belting it out and B for blues as all are here with Dino Losito/B3, Peter Bernstein/g, Jerry Weldon/ts and Carmen Intorre/dr. And as long as we’re on B, let’s discuss Weldon’s tenor, as it’s as breathy and breezy as you could ever want as he rolls in like a fog on “Don’t Explain” and an indescribably delicious “Here’s Looking At You.” Bernstein, the other B, makes the strings B for beg on “Don’t Worry ‘Bout Me” and a tearful “Good Morning, Heartache.” As for Kelly herself, she sounds like she’s been around the block and has a marvelous sass to her sound and delivery. She can B for bop with the best of “Billie’s Bounce” and take is slow and easy on the B for ballads like “Don’t Talk to Strangers.” This B for band can tell it, and you’re going to B for believe them!
