Though she was initially criticized as a Billie Holiday impersonator, vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Madeleine Peyroux shows on this retro cd that her career has been nothing but her own. Material from each of her albums is included here, which means you get to compare a couple of tracks from her 1996 Dreamland release with her 2004 return from exile and beyond. Lots of material from her Careless Love album which made her a star of Bohemia, and well deservedly so. An extended take of Warren Zevon’s “Desperadoes Under the Eaves” “Keep Me In Your Heart (which was in a movie) keep the true fan intrigued, but the thing about this disc is that Peyroux knows how to set a mood that feels like you’re in a café in the Latin Quarter, and her voice is the atmosphere you want to experience with your drink and friend. Almost like a Monet with six strings.
