Trumpeter and arranger Tony Kadleck puts together an impressive big band session that breathes new life into some standards and soul tunes. A trio of Motown pieces hit for the cycle with the easy groove of “What’s Going On” including Andy Snitzer’s rich alto and “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout A Thing” including a double play combo of solos with Pet McCann’s guitar and David Mann’s alto sax. A lazy fly ball of “African Skies” has some rich harmonies with the horns while Randy Brecker closes the inning with a nice trumpet solo in relief. Sounds of Broadway are also represented with a cleanup crew of Charles Pillow/cl, Aaron Heick/fl, David Mann/as and Tony Kadleck/fh playing small ball on a luscious take of “One Hand, One Hart”, while a gentle bossa on “Look to the Sky” has Chales Pillow’s tenor sax hitting the sweet ball and pulling to left. A tribute to Tommy Dorsy closes the take on a nostalgic “I’m Getting Sentimental Over You” which has Dave Ratajczak’s drums clearing the bases and Michael Davis’ trombone swinging for the fences. A double header of fun for big band fans.
