Todd Bishop Group: Travelogue

Here’s a well centered post bop jazz quartet for you. Todd Bishop handles the drums here, and leads from behind much more effectively than Barack Obama with a team of Chris Hhiggins/b, Richard Cole/sax-cl-fl and Jasnam daya Sing (Weber Iago)/key. The band goes back and forth between acoustic and electric, with the former sounding like a bunch of Headhunters on the funky “Only Shallow” and Cole’s bass clarinet slithering along on the plugged –in ”Rover.” Acoustically, you’ve got Cole on a rich tenor on a bopping “Moving” and a thoughtful soprano on “Far and Awake.” The band creates a dark mood with “Norwegian” and Higgins releases a cool bass lick on “Somnambulist.” Through it all, Bishop keeps the music moving forward and the rhythm section is as tight as a Kardashian legging.
