Toco: Memoria

Thought that all has been said and done with Brazilian music? Give this guy Toco a try. This release is dedicated to sounds he heard while growing up in a small town in northeast Brazil, and is a real charmer. He’s got a warm and strong voice, not overbearing yet assured, and uses it with a collection of twelve of his own compositions. Gentle percussion and keyboards supply the caressing foundation of tunes like “Minas” and the luminescent “Divino” which takes you out on a starry night. A bit of pop and funk show up on pieces like “Mane’”, and “Breque Bom” yet the rich melding of background vocals adds flavor to every serving. He does a pair of duets with Nina Miranda, with “Cigana” a romantic delight and “ Rainha” a dreamy meld of percussion and strings. Bossa is king here, and with songs like “O Tempo E Aqui” it sounds like a long reign!
