A tip of the hat to trumpet kings comes up here when leader/composer/trumpeter Bill Warfield puts together a big band that also uses ringer Randy Brecker as the soloist on a number of the tunes. The band also includes guitar wizard Vic Juris, who brings up some hot solos as well on “When Janie Takes the Stand” and the moody “In The Land of Chad and Barbie.” Brass is bragging on a take of “Speak Like A Child” and the dramatic “Pharoah’s Dance” which is a sonic delight and a perfect vehicle for Brecker’s brilliant blowing. Warfield gives himself the spotlight on the ballad “Flowerdale” which gives you a chance to compare and contrast tones when Brecker goes melancholy on”Carol.” Heaven for horn dogs.
