Here are a pair of swinging piano trios that will put a smile on your face
Someone brought up the young lady Laura Dubin right. Her musical instincts on this debut album with Sam Weber/b and Antonio H. Gurrero/dr is spot on, mixing influences of Horace Silver, Oscar Peterson and Red Garland into a hard bop heaven. Speckles of Silver shine on “Silver Lining” while “Ode to O.P.” has the fingers dancing. A rich reworking of John Coltrane’s “Resolution” finds some sparks flying on “New Year’s Resolutions” while her solo take of “easy Speakin’” strides just right. Fingers fly on “Barcelona” and the rhythm team gets a nice workout on the rumbling “Anxiety.” You’re gonna like this one!
Pianist Bob Mamet brings together a simpatico team of Larry Gray/b and Paul Wertico/dr for an impressive mix of standards and originals. He’s got a spry touch on the ivories, and does some nice things to “Take the A Train” and a buoyant reading of “Blue Bossa.” He also knows how to get sensitive, with bel canto takes of “How My Heart Sings” and “Over The Rainbow,” and yet can write a nice tune as well with a finger snapping “London House Blues” getting the neck nice and supple. Impressive old school cool!
