Land Observations: The Grand Tour

The only notes in the booklet that accompany this recording by guitarist James Brooks is the statement that the music is to “Create an imaginary travelogue through western, central and southern Europe with reference to the historic grand tour. This sonic journal” consists of overdubbed guitar pieces that are made up of simple, almost rockabilly riffs completely stripped down to an ambient level of acoustics. The gentle lines of pieces such as “Flatlands and the Flemish roads” or passive chord strumming on “Walking the Warm Colonnades” has a background/soundtrack feel, while “The Brennner Pass’ is like a passive garage band. Strummings, musings and lots of amusing effects make this a six stringed answer to material by Brian Eno
