Bassist Michael Feinberg performs “live” in a studio with a post bop team of Godwin Louis/as, Billy Buss/tp, Julian Shore/p and Terreon Gully/dr through six originals. The themes shift between a driving and dramatic “Tutuola” to a New Orleans-grooved “Duckface.” Moody and brooding themes on “But the Sound…” includes some interplay between Feinberg and Gully that slowly builds to an agonizing solo by Buss that is most effective, while Louis’ alto is soft and fluffy on “Puncher’s Chance.” Expressive and improvising, with some intriguing moments on six pieces where everyone stretches out.
