Golden toned trumpeter Matt White leads an adroitly cohesive hard bop sextet on this collection of originals. The front line of White, Evan Cobb/ts and Don Aliquo/as create some rich tapestries of harmony on pieces such as the rollicking title track or the driving “The Yankee Poured Out the Bacon Grease.” The rhythm team of Joe Davidian/p, Jonathan Wires/b and Jim White/dr runs like a V8 on the charging “Like Woody” (which also spotlights White’s wondrous sound) while Wires’ bass lays down some hip bluesy licks on “The Muse.” Cobb shows some Mobley-esque rich sound on the throbbing pulse of “The Hadron Collider” while Aliquo’s pungent alto gets a chance to shine on “the foreboding “Thelma’s Revenge.” Through each track, you’ll get drawn into White’s warm sound, able to sound fragile and fluffy or full of vinegar when needed. Nice shot of meat and potatoes on a blue plate special of jazz!
