Jim Self/Hollywood Tuba 12: ‘Tis the Season Tuba Jolly!
Twelve part arrangements for the tuba?!? Gotta love the moxie of Jim Self, and he makes it work on this fun filled and quite varied collection of Christmas tunes. Take heart, music fans; there’as also percussion and drums supplied by Brian Kilgore and Bernie Dresel respectively, and technically there are Euphoniums and Flubas to round out the sound a bit. Still, you get pieces like a bouncy “Sleigh Ride,” an old world sounding “To TUBA World,” and some swinging horn sections on “Here Comes Santa Claus” and “Frosty the Snowman.” Warm brassy harmonies by the fireside glow on “ Valse des Fleurs” and a luminous “ What Child Is This.” Much more than a novelty, almost a way of life!
