The FivePlay Jazz Quintet consists of Tony Corman/g, Lara Klein/p, Dave Tidball/reeds, Alan Hall/dr and Paul Smith/b. They hail from the Bay Area and have recorded a session at the famous Fantasy Studios that is a warm and enjoyable collection of bopping originals. Some hip soulful sounds come from the rhythm section on “Abbott’s Lagoon” and the band can boogaloo on “What Bobby Said.” Tidball’s quite versatile on the reeds, as he has a charming soprano on “The Girl You Look Right Past” gets gritty on the tenor with Corman’s guitar on “Enology.” Some wonderful reed harmonies play with the tune “Rosa Rugosa” and a lilting ¾ time “Making Spirits Rise” flows brilliantly. Impressive and encouraging sounds!
