Arnaoudov, Szymanski, Steffens, Part, Xenakis, Minchev: Sonograms

Don’t think of it as “jazz” as much as 20th or 16th century modern music. What you’ve got here is a collaboration of various Eastern European composers who’ve been interpreted by either a pianist (Angela Tosheva), recorder (Benedikta Bonitz) or a string quartet (The Panorama Quartet) along with various one-off cameos of cello, triangle and bass recorder. The piano pieces like “Two Studies” or the multi-suited title piece have a Satie-esque mix of playful and serious. The recorders, sometimes in solo and other times in groups have variations of mood from early Renaissance to Medival, with a mix of European folk on “Thyepolia” and “Four Water Colors.” A Bartok influenced “Ecstasy” is followed by the best composition, Arvo Part’s “Arbors” which mixes the best of liturgical with restful and elegiac peace. Intriguing music that will creep into the recesses of your soul
