Keyboardist Kevin Harris brings together a post bop quintet with Kendal Eddy/b, Jason Palmer/tp, Rick DiMuzio/ts and Richie Barshay/dr-Steve Langone/dr on a mix of originals and intriguing covers. Of the latter, a whimsical and sprite take of the traditional folk tune “You Are My Sunshine” features some marvelous interplay between trumpet and bass, while Bob Marleys’ “Redemption Song” includes Harris’ vocals and some dark key work. A take of Wayne Shorter’s “Prince of Darkness” has a spaciousness about it, with Palmer’s horn sounding fresh and vibrant. DiMuzio’s tenor is full of vigor on the leader’s slinky “BBBB” while Harris himself undulates on the keyboards on the interesting “Bluegrass.” A nice mix of new compositional and arranging ideas mixed with the well trodden.
