Kris Kristofferson: Feeling Mortal

One of the best pieces of advice someone ever gave me was, “Always take advice from a man who walks with a limp.” Kris Kristofferson, who’s seen all of life going both up and down, not only is that type of man, but the 76 year old SOUNDS like he could ride the stagecoach with Walter Brennan on this collection of originals. Singing about life in a reflective way, Kristofferson and his bare bones country team feel like a late night band at the local VFW as he tells stories of old friends (“Ramblin’ Jack”) and inspiringly religious relatives (“Mama Stewart”) that sounds like he’s giving warnings as well as advice. He sounds grandfatherly on “Stairway to the Bottom,” and in fact, all through this short and sweet collection, the sage seems like Solomon in Ecclesiastes, giving sound advice from a life of sin, grace and redemption. Worth checking out, since songs are supposed to tell as story, right?
