If you’re a Pat Metheny fan, you are going to go CRAZY over this double dvd set that documents Pat Metheny’s fantastic sonic experimentation with his self made gigantic music machine, the Orchestron. If you’ve only experienced Metheny’s fantastic album from a couple years ago via your ears, then you missed half of the experience, as the visual effect of this enormous collection of cymbals, bottles, strings and just about anything else hidden in an attic making wondrous music via the direction of Metheny’s guitar, fingers, feet and nobs.
Here, Metheny explains the inspiration of the music and the means of putting the entire project together. He then performs not only the music from the eponymous album, but he includes a spell-binding improvisation as well as pieces like “80/81,” “Tell Her You Saw Me” and “Antonia.” Watching the various parts of this lighted wonder provide musical support via rhythm, harmonies and accents is pure delight. Getting a peak into Metheny’s thought process and catching a glimpse of genius is equally inspiring.
