Mauricio Pessoa: Habitat

Here’s a gentle and unassuming release of Brazilian music by guitarist/vocalist Mauricio Pessoa. His soto voice is delicate and warm as he sings with a simpatico band that ranges from just a piano and bass (“Prisma”) to larger ensembles that include stings, drums, sax and flute. Luscious and floating themes like “Boca no Lodo” and “Quando Falas Coracao” are like gentle summer rains, while the instrumental “Saudade” is as delicious and inviting as an evening gelato. The only time he falters is on his English vocals on 1 ½ songs which sound more like a good effort than alluring. Still, the music is the key here, and the mood is perfect and subtropical.
