You like your music a little on the brassy side? This quartet is made for you! Trombonist Joe Fielder forms a band with two more sliders in Ryan Keberle and Josh Roseman, and then brings along tubaist Marcus Rojas to keep the whole thing from slip sliding away. The music ranges from bluesy themes to ping pong relays. When they all work together in harmony, as on the indigo “#11” or the warm “Don Pullen,” it’s like taking in a warm sunset. Some more edgy times are around on “The Crab” and the slightly disjointed “A Call For All Demons,” but Rojas keeps everything together with his majestic masseters. He even takes a heft solo on “Ging Gong” while the rest of the gents are each given some spotlights showing the various workings of the ‘bone. Intriguing to say the least!
