Here’s an intriguing disc that has a lot of good ideas, mixing a bit of traditional fusion with modern sounding concepts. Saxist Jeff Coffin leads a team that sort of sounds like a logical extension of jazz fusion groups like Weather Report. Maybe it’s due to the dna transfer brought from the band’s bassist Felix Pastorious, who’s dad had a few things to say with the iconic group. The rest of the team, Jeff Sipe/dr, Kofi Burbridge/key-fl, and Bill Fanning/tp create a cooking atmosphere on swinging and driving material like”A Half Sleep” and “U Don’t Say.” Lionel Loueke brings some intriguing electronic vocalizations as well as his patented Sahel Desert sounding guitar licks into the mix on “Lucky 13” and “Loueke,” and the rhythmic mix on “Slow Glass” is a force to be beckoned with. A little bit of electronic peeps in and out on the sax and trumpet, giving the music an adventurous but not gratuitous feel. Exciting sounds here!
