Venezuelan-born pianist Luis Perdomo has only put out a handful of
sessions under his own name, but this trio session just might get him
the recognition he deserves. He’s got a Corea-Jarrett feel to his
style, which make a lot of sense here, as his drummer on this
collection of (mostly) originals is Jack De Johnette, as well as his
bassist being the elastic Drew Gress. Their take of Joe Henderson’s
“Tetragon” has an exciting complex drive to it, while the pair of
titles called “Universal Path” show a percussive intricacy that
bounces around like a carom ball. Other self-penned tunes such as
“Rebellious Contemplations” emphasize a sophistication of sound and
delivery without betraying a South American sense of energy and
passion. Trio fans will have a feast on this delicacy.
