Here’s an intriguing configuration; pianist Aaron Goldberg, who’s made a name for himself with Kurt Rosenwinkel, teams up with Fender Rhodes keyboardist Guillermo Klein for a collection of duets, trios and small group ensembles. The collection is bookended by a rather stately yet unconventional solo reading of “All The Things You Are” before duets like “Airport Fugue” and “Burrito” undulate like piano method transcriptions. A take of “Moose The Mooche” with Miguel Zenon/as and Chris Cheek/ts and a rhythm team of Eric Harland/dr and Matt penman/b changes speeds back and forth like a Volkswagon with a bad carburetor. Everything works best on the fugue-like “Human Feel” and “Airport Fugue” which feature some wonderful interplay. Interesting, if a bit sterile.
